What are Road Safety Audits?

Austroads Guide to Road Safety Part 6: Road Safety Audit defines Road Safety Audits as “a formal examination of a future road or a traffic project or an existing road, in which an independent, qualified team reports on the project’s crash potential and safety performance“.

Road Safety Audits examine a certain road, intersection, car park design or a temporary traffic management setup with a ‘fresh independent set of eyes’ to that of the designer, to identify its safety related issues. Thus, when used before a project is built or during its planning stages, a road safety audit provides its greatest potential for enhancing safety and also becomes a cost-effective solution.

Road Safety Auditing Process

Road Safety Audits

In the road safety auditing process, the independent auditor or the auditing team do not intend to modify or comment on the design, but only provides commentary where potential safety related improvements can be facilitated. Design solutions are recommended as an impartial party, but the project manager or the designer is under no obligation to adopt recommendations provided via the road safety audit.

RSAs introduce pro-active solutions to road engineering designs rather than finding solutions as reactive measures. This is facilitated through the identification of factors that has the potential to cause crashes and also by rating these factors based on their likelihood and severity of causing crashes.

Often road authorities will require the project team to address safety related issues identified through the RSA. Therefore, it is important to organise a road safety audit and to discuss achievable outcomes with the auditors.
